The Business of Language: How SonaJapan Turned Education Into a Global Career Pipeline

Global

Sonal Shah, Founder and CEO of SonaJapan Japanese Language Academy, built an institution that turns language into careers. Over 5,000 learners later, her model is redefining what education can look like as a business.

Sonal Shah built SonaJapan Japanese Language Academy on a single conviction, that language education should open doors to careers, not just classrooms. Thirty-five years in Japan and over 5,000 learners later, that conviction has become an institution.

You have spent 35 years building in a country that was not your own. What has shaped the way you lead?

My leadership philosophy is built on purpose, people, and perseverance. I believe leadership is not about authority but about creating opportunities for others to grow and succeed. Having lived in Japan for over 35 years while maintaining strong roots in India, I have been deeply influenced by Japanese values of discipline, commitment, and continuous improvement. These principles helped me build SonaJapan from a vision into an institution that has empowered over 5,000 learners. Every challenge I faced as a woman entrepreneur in a foreign country strengthened my belief that true leadership is measured not by personal achievements, but by the positive impact we create in the lives of others.

Where is language education leaving its biggest opportunity on the table?

The greatest untapped opportunity is the integration of education, employability, and global mobility. Many institutions still focus primarily on academic delivery, while industries are seeking professionals with practical skills, cultural adaptability, and international exposure. Language education should serve as a gateway to global careers rather than simply a classroom subject. Institutions that successfully bridge skill development, cultural intelligence, and career readiness will shape the future workforce and create lasting value for both learners and employers.

What was the decision that defined SonaJapan?

The most defining decision I made was to prioritise student success and educational quality over rapid commercial expansion. From the very beginning, my goal was to make high-quality Japanese language education accessible and affordable while maintaining personalised support for every learner. This required patience, consistency, and long-term thinking. Over the years, thousands of students have gone on to build successful careers in Japan and around the world, validating that decision. It taught me that trust is the strongest foundation of any organisation. Sustainable growth comes not from chasing numbers, but from consistently delivering value and earning the confidence of the people you serve.

What does SonaJapan’s next chapter look like?

Our next phase of growth will focus on digital innovation, global partnerships, and workforce readiness. We are expanding our online learning ecosystem, strengthening corporate training solutions, and developing programmes that align with evolving international career opportunities. Artificial intelligence is transforming education, and we aim to leverage technology to enhance learning while preserving personalised mentorship. Our vision is to become a global bridge connecting talent, language, culture, and professional opportunities between India, Japan, and the wider international community.

What do you want aspiring entrepreneurs to take from your journey?

Beyond business, I strongly believe that success carries a responsibility to give back to society. I encourage aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Dreams do not have geographical boundaries, and perseverance can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. When purpose, passion, and service come together, leadership becomes a force for lasting positive change.

“Success is not measured by how far we rise ourselves, but by how many lives we empower to rise with us.”
