Simphiwe Mamvura, Managing Director of Maponya 911, is transforming emergency healthcare accessibility by expanding critical medical services across South Africa.
What has shaped your leadership journey, and what milestones stand out the most?
My career began at Toyota South Africa as a graduate management trainee before I joined Maponya 911 in 2010 as an Accounts and HR Manager. Through perseverance, continuous learning, and a commitment to excellence, I progressed to Business Development Manager, General Manager, and eventually Managing Director.
One of the defining milestones has been leading the company’s growth from 45 employees and six branches to more than 200 employees across 25 branches nationwide. Today, Maponya 911 ranks among South Africa’s five largest ambulance services, and being part of that journey remains my greatest professional achievement.
Tell us about Maponya 911 and the purpose behind its establishment.
Maponya 911 was established to address the shortage of emergency medical services in Soweto and other underserved communities where access to ambulance transportation was extremely limited.
Today, we are the largest Black-owned emergency medical service in South Africa, operating across eight provinces. While ambulance services remain our core offering, we also provide occupational health consultancy, medical standby services, first aid training, medical equipment supply, project management, and policy development. Our mission has always been to ensure that patients receive timely, life-saving care during the critical “golden hour.”
What has been the biggest leadership challenge you have faced, and how did you overcome it?
Coming from a commerce background rather than a medical one was initially my greatest challenge. Entering a highly specialised healthcare industry meant I had to work harder to understand medical operations, industry regulations, and healthcare terminology while earning the confidence of colleagues and stakeholders.
I overcame this by investing in continuous learning and refusing to let my lack of a clinical background define my capabilities. Knowledge, combined with self-belief and determination, allowed me to grow both as a leader and as a business professional.
What keeps you motivated as a leader?
I have never been afraid of challenges. I believe the best approach is to face them head-on, learn from every experience, and continuously evaluate my own performance.
Regular self-reflection helps me identify opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally. Every challenge has strengthened my resilience and reinforced my belief that leadership is about remaining adaptable, decisive, and committed to serving both your team and the communities that rely on you.
“Leadership is about facing challenges head-on, continuously learning, and ensuring every decision creates a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.”
