Architecture often celebrates iconic structures and grand developments, but Ar. Smita Das has spent much of her career focusing on a different challenge, designing spaces that improve the daily lives of ordinary people. Through Speaking Designs, she has worked on thousands of homes across India, demonstrating that impactful design is not defined by scale, but by how effectively it serves those who use it.
What core principles guide the way you lead today?
My leadership philosophy is centred on empathy, humility, and relentless perseverance. Over the years, I have learned that genuine listening, to clients, teams, and even failures, creates stronger outcomes than simply directing from the top.
I believe no technology can replace the human ability to understand emotions and translate them into meaningful spaces. Personal challenges and professional setbacks have taught me resilience and reinforced the importance of leading with calm confidence, accessibility, and a solutions-focused mindset.
What is a shift or opportunity in your industry that leaders are still underestimating?
One of the biggest untapped opportunities lies in designing thoughtful, affordable, and scalable solutions for middle-income and smaller homes.
While much of the industry focuses on large projects, there is enormous demand for practical, climate-sensitive, and space-efficient housing. My experience has shown that even compact homes can become dignified and joyful spaces when functionality leads the design process.
Walk us through a pivotal moment in building your organisation.
One of the most defining decisions I made was choosing to rebuild and scale my practice after a period of personal, health, and professional challenges.
Rather than stepping back, I embraced larger initiatives, redesigned processes, adopted technology, and placed greater trust in my team. That experience taught me that resilience combined with clarity of purpose can transform adversity into opportunity. It also reaffirmed my commitment to making quality design accessible to more people.
As you look ahead, what is the ambition you are building towards?
My focus is on scaling Speaking Designs intelligently while preserving the values that define us. We are strengthening systems, embracing digital consultations, and expanding into redevelopment and sustainable, climate-responsive housing.
At the same time, I am committed to mentoring future leaders and ensuring that growth never comes at the expense of empathy, integrity, or design authenticity. The goal is to create a lasting impact through architecture that remains both accessible and meaningful.
Even the smallest space can become a dignified and joyful environment when design begins with people and their everyday needs.
