Fortescue Metals Group, one of Australia’s leading iron ore producers, has officially broken ground on its innovative Green Metal Project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This pioneering project is expected to commence production of green iron by 2025, marking a significant step forward in the global push towards sustainable and eco-friendly industrial practices.

Located at the Green Energy Hub at Christmas Creek, the pilot plant will utilize green hydrogen produced at Fortescue’s recently commissioned gaseous and liquid hydrogen facility. The plant is designed to create over 1,500 tonnes of green metal annually, using an electric smelting furnace powered by green hydrogen, positioning Fortescue at the forefront of green metal production.

The hydrogen facility, which forms the backbone of this project, has a production capacity of approximately 530 kilograms of hydrogen per day, translating to around 195 tonnes annually. This facility is partially powered by solar energy and underscores Fortescue’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. It also features a hydrogen refueling station that services a fleet of 10 hydrogen-powered coaches alongside a hydrogen liquefaction facility, liquid hydrogen storage, and a liquid hydrogen refueling station. These components are integral to Fortescue’s broader zero-emission decarbonization and innovation strategy.

The USD 50 million Green Metal Project is one of three major initiatives for which Fortescue made a final investment decision (FID) at the end of 2023. The project is a testament to Fortescue’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and supporting global climate goals by transitioning towards greener production methods. By leveraging green hydrogen, Fortescue aims to significantly cut down on the carbon footprint traditionally associated with iron production, setting a new standard in the industry.

As the world increasingly turns its focus to sustainable industrial solutions, Fortescue’s Green Metal Project is poised to play a crucial role in the future of green metal production. The company’s investment in green hydrogen technology not only strengthens Australia’s position as a leader in renewable energy but also demonstrates a scalable model for integrating green technologies into heavy industries.

The groundbreaking at the Green Metal Project marks the beginning of a new era in iron production that could reshape the industry and contribute to a more sustainable global economy.
