Chinese renewable energy giant Envision Energy has announced plans to invest US$1 billion in constructing a green hydrogen industrial park in Spain, marking a significant step toward Europe’s clean energy transition. The Shanghai-based company, the world’s second-largest wind turbine supplier, will partner with the Spanish government and local industries to create the facility, contributing to Spain’s ambitious green energy targets.
Green hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy, is emerging as the cleanest form of hydrogen fuel, earning it the title “fuel of the future.” The industrial park will focus on producing electrolysers—key devices that split water to produce hydrogen. This green hydrogen can power vehicles, generate electricity, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Envision Energy’s industrial park is projected to deliver 5 gigawatts (GW) of electrolysis capacity, nearly half of Spain’s national target of 11GW by 2030. The facility is expected to create 1,000 new jobs, contributing to Spain’s growing green energy sector.
The announcement follows an agreement made during Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s visit to China earlier this week. During his visit, Prime Minister Sanchez met with Zhang Lei, Envision Energy’s founder and chairman, to solidify the collaboration between Spain and China in the green hydrogen sector.
Zhang Lei expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “With its ideal resources, market scale, and expertise, Spain is well-placed to be the European leader in green hydrogen. Envision is excited to play a role in securing Spain’s green energy future.” The partnership reflects China’s growing influence in the global clean energy market. China, already the world’s largest wind and solar energy producer, has ambitious goals to dominate the green hydrogen sector. Envision Energy’s investment in Spain further advances China’s position as a leader in producing low-cost electrolysers and exporting green hydrogen.
The construction of the green hydrogen industrial park will significantly boost Spain’s efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 23% by 2030, which aligns with the European Union’s climate goals. As Spain accelerates its shift toward renewable energy, this project is a vital component of its strategy to transition away from carbon-based fuels and become a key player in Europe’s green hydrogen market.
Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2026. Envision Energy is currently working with the Spanish government to select the optimal location for the facility, which will play a crucial role in securing Spain’s future as a leader in the clean energy industry.
