OpenAI this week launched its frontier AI models, Codex coding agent, and a new Bedrock Managed Agents service on Amazon Web Services, making its most advanced tools available to enterprises through AWS for the first time. The move follows a renegotiated agreement with Microsoft, which had previously held exclusive rights to OpenAI’s products via Azure. That exclusivity has now been replaced with a non-exclusive licence through 2032, clearing the way for OpenAI to operate across multiple cloud platforms.
The shift traces back to February, when Amazon agreed to invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI, a deal that put the two companies on a collision course with Microsoft’s existing contract. Microsoft’s open-ended exclusivity, which had been tied to the undefined milestone of OpenAI achieving AGI, was the sticking point. Both sides renegotiated, and Microsoft retains its position as primary cloud partner alongside a roughly 27 percent equity stake in OpenAI.
For enterprise leaders, the practical impact is immediate: OpenAI’s tools are now accessible within existing AWS infrastructure, without the need to migrate to a new cloud environment. The AI market has moved, and multi-cloud is now the reality.
