In a remarkable effort to preserve and rejuvenate one of India’s oldest and most revered horse racing venues, billionaire philanthropists and industrialists Yohan and Michelle Poonawalla have successfully completed the renovation and remodelling of the iconic Pune Turf Club. This ambitious project, which marries the club’s historic charm with modern elegance, has not only revitalised the space but also ensured its continued relevance in India’s horse racing landscape.

The Pune Turf Club, a part of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), has long been more than just a venue. It has been a cultural and social hub where the spirit of horse racing pulses through every corner. Thanks to the Poonawalla family’s vision and financial support, the club has undergone a stunning transformation that will generate crucial additional revenue, bolstering the growth and sustainability of Indian horse racing.

Michelle Poonawalla, a renowned philanthropist and entrepreneur, led the creative vision behind the renovation. Her expertise and passion have seamlessly blended the club’s heritage with contemporary design elements, resulting in a space that exudes both old-world charm and modern opulence. The two-year renovation project, spanning from 2022 to 2024, included a comprehensive overhaul of the club’s infrastructure.

The renovation included the refurbishment of 24 guest rooms, reception lobbies, public spaces, and offices. Four charming cottages were also revitalised, preserving the club’s historic essence while infusing it with modern amenities. The grand ballroom, with its restored wooden ceiling and dazzling chandeliers, now offers a regal ambience, while the verandahs have been reborn as elegant spaces for members to unwind. Beyond the interiors, the club’s exterior has also seen a significant transformation. The sprawling lawns and gardens have been meticulously landscaped, creating a serene outdoor environment that enhances both relaxation and safety.

“The Pune Turf Club holds a special place in our hearts,” said Michelle Poonawalla. “We wanted to honour its rich history while creating a modern space that would be enjoyed by generations to come. This renovation is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a tribute to our family’s enduring passion for horse racing and breeding.”

The Poonawalla family’s deep-rooted connection to the sport is evident in their unwavering support for the Pune Turf Club. The Poonawalla Stud Farms, established in 1946 by Yohan’s grandfather, the late Soli A. Poonawalla, has been a cornerstone of India’s racing landscape for decades.

RWITC Chairman Suren Sanas expressed his gratitude for the Poonawallas’ extraordinary generosity, stating, “Their contribution has been pivotal in bolstering our club’s financial standing at a time when it was most needed. We are confident that this newfound strength will propel us toward new heights in the horse racing industry.”
