Lamborghini, the Italian luxury sports car manufacturer, has announced a timeline for the launch of its inaugural electric vehicle (EV), setting the year 2029 for the release.  This plan marks a strategic move in the EV market for Lamborghini, which operates under the larger Volkswagen Group umbrella.

In a statement made recently, CEO Stephan Winkelmann expressed the company’s perspective on the transition to electric vehicles within the sports car segment. According to Winkelmann, the current market conditions do not favor a full shift to electrification for the niche that Lamborghini occupies. He emphasized that the brand does not consider the year 2029 to be a late entry into the electric market.

Winkelmann’s comments were delivered during a briefing at the company’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese. He noted that the market for high-performance electric sports cars is not expected to mature by 2025 or 2026, aligning with Lamborghini’s decision to target a 2029 launch for their EV.

The announcement revises Lamborghini’s earlier projection, which slated their first electric vehicle’s arrival for 2028. The shift places Lamborghini’s EV debut after its Italian competitor, Ferrari, which has planned its first EV launch for the first quarter of next year.

Lamborghini’s strategy reflects careful consideration of the evolving automotive landscape as it prepares to bring its brand ethos into the electric era.
