In a bid to enhance irrigation efficiency and promote sustainable cotton farming, commodity trading giant Cargill has partnered with Australian agtech company Goanna Ag. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in advancing agricultural technology in the southern United States, particularly in the cotton industry.
The partnership involves testing Goanna Ag’s GoField technology platform on selected cotton fields across Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. This cutting-edge platform integrates advanced tools such as sensors, satellite imagery, weather forecasts, and other crucial crop data to allow farmers to manage irrigation precisely. The ultimate goal is to optimize water usage, conserve resources, and ensure optimal crop yields.
The importance of this pilot project is underscored by the ongoing challenges in the Mississippi Delta region, which is the third-largest area of irrigated cropland in the U.S. However, the region has faced a significant decline in groundwater levels, posing a threat to farm water availability.
